Aboard the ferry, ‘Hopalong’ Dave quietly asked Ben: “What’s ‘Monkey’s’ real name again?” Probably Bonobo (otherwise known as the pygmy chimpanzee, the bonobo has red lips and the ears are small and inconspicuous).

Apart from Took and Monkey, two of the more notable members of the contingent were Big Nom and Katoey. The latter looked a lot like a ladyboy, but most assuredly wasn’t, while the former possessed enough lung capacity to fill the average Scuba tank. Another was a girl I’ll call Ying. While she was the most facially attractive of the group and very photogenic, she possessed all the personal charm of a garden snail.

After exiting the ferry our convoy turned right to head in the direction of Bang Bao, a fishing village with houses and shops built along a pier stretching out into a sheltered bay. We found parking at the start of the pier, in front of a Thai restaurant and near the taxi stand. The ubiquitous 7-11 convenience store soon lured some of the bleary-eyed girls through its doors, no doubt doubling the average daily takings of the joint. We then walked a few minutes down the narrow pier to the Bang Bao Sea Huts.
